
Chi
has been almost famous twice. First he was cast in the film Ironweed in
two scenes with Meryl Streep and Jack Nickolson as a principal (meaning
name
in the credits) and then they put a mask on his face and dubbed over
his
voice. Two years later, at the late age of 14, he had a final call-back
for
the first black hit TV show after the Cosby’s: Family
Matters. He was
almost Urkel.
Chi recently appeared off-Broadway in The Misanthrope (Clitandre) and Scapin (Carle) at The Classic Stage Company. Favorite appearances: Othello (Othello), Three Days of Rain (Pip/Theo), Edward II (Gaveston), Ivanov (Ivanov), Oedipus Rex (Oedipus), The Threepenny Opera (MC/Ballad Singer), You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown (Snoopy) and The Rise and Rise of Daniel Rocket (Daniel) for which he received the NETC Moss Hart Award. Chi also recently directed A Midsummer Night’s Dream and My Beautiful Mirage.
The Crystal Stair, Wright’s his first original work, premiered in 2002 to critically-acclaimed reviews. This full-length multimedia work explores Wright’s childhood and coming of age experience.
For over 10 years Chi has been an arts educator teaching drama, voice, creative movement, performance, writing, yoga and improvisation skills for both children and adults. He has taught with three New York City Public Schools at the middle and high school level: The School of the Future, PS 279, and Wadeligh School for the Performing Arts. He has also taught at Rikers Island Correctional Facility, Community Word Project, IMPACT Youth Repertory Theatre (Harlem), The Theatre Offensive (Boston), The Neighborhood School (Boston), Nosara Retreat (Costa Rica), Kripalu Center (Berkshires), American Family Cruises as well as private classes in New York City, Boston, Connecticut and Costa Rica.
Chi Wright holds an M.F.A. from Columbia University under the direction of Kristin Linklater, Andrei Serban and Anne Bogart. His B.A. is from Lesley University in a self-designed degree in Performance. For over twelve years, Chi has been a certified in movement, yoga and massage therapy. His favorite color is purple.
